Palazzeschi Building
This palace, which bears the letters 'GBP' on the wrought iron decoration above the entrance, was the residence of Giovanbattista di Giuseppe Palazzeschi. His family, originating from 'Il Palazzo,' a location near Subbiano, became wealthy from the 16th century onwards through the ownership of estates, mills along the Arno River, and local administrative roles as tax collectors. Eventually, they were ennobled in Arezzo in 1837.
GiovanBattista was one of the wealthiest and most prominent members. He actively participated in the political and administrative life of Subbiano: from 1878 onwards, he was a member of the municipal council; in July 1897, he was appointed Mayor but resigned in October, remaining as a Councilor. In 1888, he ranked thirteenth in the list of major contributors to the Council; in August 1900, the Council unanimously decided to send him to represent the municipality at the solemn funeral and transport of Umberto I's remains to the Pantheon; in 1903, the Council congratulated him on being appointed a Knight of the Crown of Italy.
At the same time, he personally managed his estates, overseeing improvements such as the construction of the 'Rocolo' and the 'Garden on the Arno.' After a productive life, he passed away in Subbiano on January 26, 1920.
The Palazzeschi family, with branches dating back to the 16th century, also includes Virginia and Orsola, known for founding the orphanage and children's home named in their honor.
